"Immigrants: we get the job done" -- Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hamilton
Caroline Jorns and Rudolph Heise
Charles August Rudolf Heise was born in Magdeburg, Prussia, in 1839-1841, the son of Heinrich August G Heise and Charlotte Nohring. He emigrated to the States some time before 1870. In US records, he's usually referred to as Rudolph.
On April 7, 1871, Rudolph married Caroline Johanna Jorns in Manhattan. Caroline was born 1844-1845 in the Duchy of Braunschweig (in English, Brunswick), 85 km WNW of Magdeburg. Her parents were "Henry" (probably Heinrich) Jorns and Henriette Hennig. She may be the "Lina" Jorns born in Braunschweig in 1840 who arrived in New York on May 2, 1857, aboard the SS Hansa out of Bremen. Lina was travelling with Henrietta Jorns, born in Braunschweig in 1808. I was unable to find any subsequent records for Henrietta.
It's possible that Rudolph and Caroline lived together before marriage. The 1870 US Census includes a record for Rudolph and Carolina "Heis," who were enumerated in Manhattan's 10th Ward. Rudolph was born 1839 in Prussia and was a musician by trade which agrees with the death record for "our" Rudolph. Carolina was born in 1845, supposedly also in Prussia (rather than in Braunschweig).
The New York City Directories for 1875-1876 and 1876-1877 list a Rudolph Heise, musician, who lived at 85 Eldridge Street. By 1877-1878 he had moved to 308 Sixth Street.
By 1880, Rudolph and Caroline had moved to 342 Sixth Street. Rudolph's listed at this address in the city directories for 1884-1885, 1891-1892 and 1892-1893.
Rudolph died in Manhattan on February 8, 1895. His death states his occupation as musician and gives his parents' names: Henry A Heise and Charlotte Heise. His marital status is listed as widowed, indicating that Caroline predeceased him. She may or may not be the "Lena" Heise born in 1842 who died in Manhattan on January 21, 1895.
